The Broken Plate

The Broken Plate

The mantra most ceramic artists and I follow is, “It’s just clay, make it again.”

Such a simple statement during a painful moment of pause.

What ever caused that pause; whether it be a cylinder’s collapse from a weak wall, or a piece blowing up in the kiln because it wasn’t dry enough… it’s always tougher to follow this philosophy the further you are along in the process.

The irony is, my kids didn’t kill it, even though that is always my fear as I meticulously glaze my ceramics… it was me. Clumsy ole me.

I turned and elbowed it off my table and onto my wonderful linoleum-covered concrete floor.

It didn’t have a chance.

Floor = 1 Plate = 0
